i've read a lot of reviews of this book and theyre kinda all over the place. i was told this was "mass effect minus the reapers" and you know what? it is mass effect minus the reapers except there's very distantly the reapers. i loved almost all the characters and the high octane action was great! the worldbuilding is on par with iain m banks' culture books with no godlike ai.. yet. i suspect there's a chekov's gun there in future books and series. there's 26 mentioned xenos species in the region of the galaxy the series is set in. in this book, we only meet with four or so we've got the ufs phoenix, "hero ship", like mass effects' normandy theres a super badass marine character thats like angela bassett's character from the movie strange days. not a mary sue or gary stu in this book. for me, this …

I haven't read sci-fi in a good while and this came across as a fun, light read and it was indeed. It's military sci-fi and a mix between hard and soft. The actual science of being and moving in space plays a role, but only to a certain degree. The mechanism behind FTL travel, for example, is never examined.
