Bob Johansson has just sold his software company and is looking forward to a life of leisure. There are places to go, books to read, and movies to watch. So it's a little unfair when he gets himself killed crossing the street.

Bob wakes up a century later to find that corpsicles have been declared to be without rights, and he is now the property of the state. He has been uploaded into computer hardware and is slated to be the controlling AI in an interstellar probe looking for habitable planets. The stakes are high: no less than the first claim to entire worlds. If he declines the honor, he'll be switched off, and they'll try again with someone else. If he accepts, he becomes a prime target. There are at least three other countries trying to get their own probes launched first, and they play dirty.

Fun space exploration read

It’s a fun hard sci-fi book! The book is more about the journey than the plot but I enjoyed my time with the Bobs exploring space. I think the book does really well at making each Bob an individual and this helped when switching between locations and times and sometimes viewing the same event with slightly different views. There are some really interesting philosophical questions about who/what the Bobs are which are brought up but not really answered. I was happy to make my own thoughts about whether the Bobs are alive and individuals but I think the book could have been improved by addressing this and cutting a little of the project management.

Why are guys like this?

I guess this just isn't my thing, but I do get tired of these weird power fantasy books pretty quickly. I made it though this one, but I don't have any interested in the rest of the series.
